Preschool Swim Lessons

In order to enroll in a pre-school class, students must have an evaluation from the South Brunswick Family YMCA stating that the class is the appropriate level for the preschool aged student.

For all other classes, a swim evaluation is required. To schedule an appointment, please contact Ray Dasant at 732-329-1150 x204 or via email at ray@southbrunswickymca.org.

• Skip: Class ratio 12:1: 6 months to 36 months with a parent/guardian in water. Children will develop confidence in the water through play and songs, learn to kick their feet and put their face in the water. As they become comfortable they will learn vital water safety skills.

• Toddlers - swim evaluation required for all classes• Pike & Parent: Class ratio 12:1: With parent/guardian in water this class will develop early water skills for progression into the perch or pike class. • Perch: Class ratio 6:1: This class is designed for those who are not ready to hold on to the wall and children are taught from the step. Children are introduced to humming, kicking and arm paddling and learn important safety skills. • Pike: Class ratio 6:1: A water orientation class for toddlers with little experience, but for children who are ready to hold on to the wall and be in the pool without a parent. Focus is on basic fundamentals of freestyle and floating. To progress from Pike the child must be comfortable putting their face in the water for at least 3 seconds. • Eel: Class ratio 6:1: A swim evaluation is required for this class designed for children able to comfortably put their face in the water. Class builds upon previously learned skills. To progress from Eel the child must be able to float on their own. • Ray: Class ratio 6:1: A swim evaluation is required and students must be able to float without support. This class continues to build on previously learned skills and children will be introduced to breathing techniques, arm circles and backstroke. • Starfish: Class ratio 6:1: A swim evaluation is required and children must be able to swim on their own either with a doggie paddle stroke or over arm stroke. An over arm stroke and rotary breathing will be taught and endurance will be increased.

Swim evaluation required for all classes.

• Barracuda: Class ratio 8:1: For children who do not swim. Focus is on gliding and floating. Leg and arm movements will be incorporated. Swimmers must be able to doggy paddle proficiently to progress into Polliwog A. Top • Polliwog A: Class ratio 8:1: This class is for children who have little experience in the water but who can propel themselves forward unassisted. For progression to the next level swimmers must have rudimentary over arm stroke and be able to float on their back. Top• Polliwog B: Class ratio 8:1: A class focusing on developing endurance and good breathing techniques. For progression to the next level students must be able to swim freestyle and demonstrate basic breathing techniques.Top • Guppy A: Class ratio 8:1: A class that focuses on improving swim strokes though a series of drills. Rotary breathing, treading water and backstroke will be emphasized. For progression to the next level, students must be able to swim on length of the pool without stopping. Top • Guppy B: Class ratio 8:1: A swim evaluation is Guppy B is for children who have an over arm stroke with rudimentary breathing and can swim on their back. For progression swimmers must be able to swim two lengths of the pool on their front and backs, without stopping. Top • Minnow: Class ratio 8:1: Swimmers will further refine their skills for front crawl and backstroke. The breaststroke will be introduced. For progression students must be able to swim four laps on front and backs without stopping. Top• Fish: Class ratio 10:1: Swimmers will continue to work on technique and refine skills on the three main strokes: freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke. A greater emphasis will be put on endurance and form. Flip turns will be introduced. For progression to the next level swimmers must be able to swim 6 laps each of freestyle, backstroke, and breaststroke.Top • Flying Fish: Class ratio 10:1: A class focusing on flip turns and skills and drills. The butterfly stroke will be introduced and students will continue to build endurance and refine strokes. Top • Intro To Competitive Swimming The Director’s approval is required for this class focusing on refining flip turns, stroke methods as well as skills and drills.

Adult Swim Lesson• Teen, Adult and Special Classes • Adult/Teen Swim Lessons Beginner and advanced level group classes for teens over 15 and adults. Individual attention based on the swimmer’s ability.

• Aqua Fit An aquatic workout that is easy on the joints while building cardiovascular endurance through moving, jogging and jumping routines. Routine consists of a warm-up, cardio portion, weights, abs, and cool down in the pool using various aquatics equipment. Through the use of water weights you will strengthen muscles, gain flexibility and tone-up your entire body.

• Arthritis Foundation Aquatic Program (A.F.A.P) This class is designed by the Arthritis Foundation for people with all types of arthritis. It is a recreational aquatics class developed to improve range of motion, muscle strength and overall body endurance. This program does not put excess strain on your joints or muscles but helps you gain strength and flexibility.

• Private Swim Lessons Private lessons are available for children or adults with instruction based upon each swimmer’s individual abilities. 1:1 or 2:1 student/instructor ratio. For private lessons with two people the first person is full price, the second person half price.

.• Adaptive Swim Program This program is designed for those 12 months to 18 years of age with social, emotional or physical challenges. Swimmers will be encouraged to explore water through games, songs, play with water toys and interactions with instructors and peers. Swimming skills are taught through play activities.

• Pool Policies
1. All participants must be dressed appropriately in a bathing suit. Exceptions will be made on an as needed basis.

2. Admittance may be refused if participant has open wounds, diseases, excessive blister, sunburn, etc.

3. Any child taking an aquatics class must have a parent/guardian in the YMCA building while the class or activity is in session.

4. Swimming will be prohibited during an electrical/thunderstorm storm.

5. No food or glass containers allowed on the pool deck.

6. Children in diapers must be wearing a plastic swim pant or swim diaper upon entering the pool. All children should be encouraged to use the bathroom before entering the pool.

7. Any conduct that endangers the safety of others will be prohibited.

8. All children under the age of 11 must be accompanied in the water by an parent/guardian during family swim, unless they have received an Expert Swim pass from the Aquatics Director.

9. Any participant that vomits or goes to the bathroom in the pool will be given one (1) formal warning. A repeat occurrence will result in termination from use of the YMCA pool.

• Recreational Swim Adult and Family Swims are available for facility members. These times are provided for members to swim laps and/ or families to have fun in a safe environment. All children under 11 must be accompanied in to the water by a parent or guardian. The South Brunswick Family YMCA provides noodles for the convenience of our members. All other toys or flotation devices need to be brought from home. Please see the brochure for times. Children 7-11 years old can obtain an expert swim pass from the Aquatics Director to swim without parents.
